    [02] Gov't on deadly shoot-out

(ANA-MPA) -- Referring to a deadly shoot-out between police and two suspected robbers on Tuesday, which left one civilian dead and two police officers injured, Citizens' Protection Minister Mihalis Chrysohoidis on Wednesday stressed that it was a "crucial battle won at a heavy cost".

(ANA-MPA)-- "We cannot talk of a success when we are mourning the loss of a life," he underlined in statements regarding the outcome of the police stakeout in the east Athens district of Vyronas, in which the two suspects were eventually arrested but a 25-year-old passer-by was fatally injured when he was caught in the cross-fire between the suspects and police.

(ANA-MPA) -- The minister said an inquiry into the circumstances of the death had been launched by judicial authorities, which would determine whether there had been any negligence or blame on the part of police.

(ANA-MPA) -- The two Albanians arrested were escaped convicts who had failed to return to Larissa prison after getting out on furlough. Chrysohoidis described them as extremely dangerous, while in their hideout police reportedly found 30 hand-grenades, AK-47 assault rifles, handguns, bullets and large quantities of the TNT.
