    [02] Carnival celebrated throughout Greece

The last weekend of carnival will be celebrated throughout Greece on Saturday and Sunday, as Monday marks the religious holiday of "Shrove Monday", the beginning of Lent in the predominately Christian Orthodox east Mediterranean country. Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on Sunday, April 4 this year.

The western port-city of Patras traditionally boasts the biggest and best-known carnival festivities in Greece, although several other regions -- especially in northern Greece and the Ionian islands -- have distinct customs and rites, many predating Christianity and based on ancient pagan rituals. Some 30,000 carnival participants, including Italian acrobats and drummers, are expected to parade through Patras' main thoroughfare, both on foot and atop floats.

    [03] Poll: Tough measures backed

(ANA-MPA) -- A majority of respondents in a recent poll reportedly favored the government's handling of the ongoing and severe economic crisis in the country as well as related measures.

According to results of a poll published in an Athens weekly, 60.7 percent of respondents said the recently measures were "heading in the right direction"; 65 percent said the measures were "fair and necessary" (24.9 percent disagreed), while 63.7 percent blamed politicians for the serious crisis.

The poll was conducted by the Alco firm and published in the weekly "Proto Thema".

[04] Evros in state of emergency

(ANA-MPA) -- Evros Prefecture in extreme northeast Greece was declared in a state of emergency early Sunday morning due to flooding in the region from the same-name river that separates Greece and Turkey in the Thrace province.

Reinforcing dykes along the Evros River and the closure of rail bridges were reported on Sunday.

Torrential rains in the prefecture and upstream in southeast Bulgaria have caused extensive flooding along the Evros (Maritsa) River's banks.

Meanwhile, further to the west in the western Macedonia region, authorities warned motorists to use snow chains or snow tires due to heavy snowfall. Specifically, the prefectures of Florina, Kastoria, Kozani and Grevena are affected.
