  • [01] Hellenistic Period tombs unearthed by torrential rainfall

Eight tombs dating to the Hellenistic Period were partially revealed recently in the region of Gonous, Larissa prefecture, central Greece, after flooding caused by heavy rainfall swept away a rural dirt road.

The archaeological service subsequently conducted an excavation, which brought to light the tombs. According to an initial assessment the finds date to between the end of the 4th century BC and the beginning of the 3rd century BC.

Of the eight tombs, only one is intact.

    [02] Economy shrinks 2.6% in Q4

(ANA-MPA) -- The Greek economy shrank by 2.6 pct in the fourth quarter of 2009, the National Statistics Service announced on Friday. In a report, the service said the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shrank by 2.6 pct in the October-December quarter, compared with the corresponding period in 2008, while it fell 0.8 pct compared with the third quarter of 2009.

The statistical service attributed the 2.6-pct drop in GDP mainly to a revision of data for new sector indices in manufacturing, construction, tourism, commerce, etc.
