[01] Three arrested in arson attack on city bus in ThessalonikiThessaloniki police have arrested three people in connection with an arson attack on a public transport bus, in which a minor was injured, it was announced on Monday.Police said a group of approximately 20 individuals broke the windows of the bus and threw lit torches into its interior, resulting in the injury of a 10-year-old boy. The detainees, aged 18, 27 and 37, believed to be fans of a local soccer team, will be led before a public prosecutor on Monday. [02] "Ajami" wins Golden Alexander at 50th Thessaloniki International Film FestivalThe 50th Thessaloniki International Film Festival came to an end on Sunday night with the closing ceremony and the presentation of awards.The top prize, the Golden Alexander for Best Feature-Length Film, was awarded to the Israeli-German production "Ajami" ("Crossroads of life") by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani. The award was presented by German film director Werner Herzog who, it was announced during the Festival, will also be the president of the critics committee at the 60th Berlin Film Festival. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of 40,000 euros. The special Jury award, the Silver Alexander (25,000 euros), went to the Romanian film "Medal of Honor" by Calin Netzer, while its leading actor Victor Rebengiuc received the Best Actor Award. The Best Director Award was presented to Rigoberto Perezcano of Mexico for his film "Norteado" ("Northless"). Copti and Shani also shared the Best Screenplay Award with Tudor Voican for "Medal of Honor". The Best Actress Award went to Ruth Nirere for her performance in the Belgian-French film Le jour ou Dieu est parti en voyage" ("The Day God Walked Away"). Lastly, the Artistic Achievement Award went to the film "Sarameul Chatseumnida" ("Missing Person") by Seo Lee of S. Korea. The International Thessaloniki Film Festival has, since 1992, striven to present the most innovative independent films from around the world, and has evolved into one of the Balkans' primary showcases for the work of new and emerging filmmakers. The films competing in this year's Festival will be screened over the next two weeks in 17 cities throughout Greece. AssemblyEconomy, Competitiveness and Shipping minister Louka Katseli will represent Greece at the 26th General Assembly of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London on Monday.While in London, Katseli will have bilateral meetings with Greece's IMO secretary general Efthimios Mitropoulos, the presidium of the London-based Greek Shipping Cooperation Committee (known simply as the Committee), and with China's deputy transport minister on Monday, and with British under-secretary of state for transport Paul Clarke on Tuesday. Two main items on the IMO General Assembly agenda are protection of the marine environment and confronting piracy off the coasts of Somalia, while the Assembly will also elect new IMO Council members for the two-year term 2010-2011. [04] Piracy thwarted off YemenThe Greek coast guard command clarified on Sunday that a Greek-managed bulk carrier was attacked by armed pirates off the coast of Yemen on Nov. 16, but the attempts to board the vessel were unsuccessful.The vessel, identified as the "Red Sea Spirit," reportedly eluded two pirate speedboats after its skipper took evasive measures at sea. in the Gulf of Aden near Yemen. According to the shipping company Secure Hold, the Panamanian-flagged vessel is continuing its course for Karachi, Pakistan. The clarification came in response to foreign news reports that the vessel was seized by pirates.
