  • [01] ND leadership struggle heightening

The struggle for the leadership of the main opposition New Democracy party, ahead of the election for a new party leader on November 29, reached new heights on Friday with speeches by the three contestants, former foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis, Antonis Samaras and Panayiotis Psomiadis, in Athens and the northern city of Thessaloniki.

Dora Bakoyannis, addressing a rally in an indoor stadium in the Athens suburb of Maroussi, said that "some are afraid to discuss the substantive problems and prefer a monologue," referring to the rejection of a proposal for a televised debate by her fellow contestants.

Antonis Samaras said in the Athens district of Kallithea that "we shall come to power again as soon as we hear the voice of the grassroots," while earlier he had addressed a rally in Keratsini.

Panayiotis Psomiadis, speaking in the "Ioannis Vellidis" convention centre in Thessaloniki, appealed to ND voters to back his candidacy so that the voice of the neglected Greek countryside can be heard.
