  • [01] PM convenes informal cabinet meeting

Prime Minister George Papandreou, speaking during an informal cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening after coming directly from the airport upon his return from Berlin where he attended the ceremony on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall, said that "it is our duty to keep alive the hope of every citizen."

Papandreou said that he had a meeting at the airport with Serb President Boris Tadic, with whom he discussed the course of Serbia and of the Western Balkans to the European Union.

Referring to his presence in Berlin, the prime minister said that the "country's presence in the great changes that are taking place is of special importance."

The informal cabinet meeting was aimed at, as the prime minister said, making an initial assessment of the government's work over the short period that the government has assumed its duties.

Papandreou stressed that despite the fact that the period is very short, the assessment of the work is positive, since the government is intervening on a daily basis and directly in the entire spectrum of issues concerning the citizen and despite the difficult situation prevailing in the country and which is not corresponding to its real capabilities.

The prime minister further said that the government's absolute priority is the observance of the programme for the first 100 days since, as he pointed out, these commitments are a precondition for the next steps to be taken.

Papandreou added that "our enemies" are untransparency, clientele relations, inequalities and the small and big interests that want to impose their will at the expense of national and public interest.
