Papoulias, who was greeted at the airport by Thessaloniki mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos and other officials, stressed that "Proof of love for our homeland, in other words patriotism, is protection of the natural wealth. We inherited a magnificent land, with unique beauty, and we are handing it over to the next generation with fewer forest, fewer waters, with a worse climate".

"Proof of love for our homeland is the battle for better education for everyone. Rallying together in such an effort has a visionary content and is the only way to remedy every delay presented today by our country. An uneducated people is a finished people," the President continued.

"Proof of love for our homeland is also our disposition to change the culture of the daily life. The culture of daily life is respect for our environment, the other person and, in the final analysis, ourselves. It is respect for the people with disabilities, respect for the elderly and the children, for every vulnerable group. for every minority," Papoulias added.

"Proof of love for our homeland is the contribution, by all those who have the ability, to the effort for social cohesion, which is put at risk when unemployment is galloping, when exclusion intensifies," the President further said.

Papoulias noted that the triple celebration provides the opportunity "to remember the national anniversaries and have thoughts that help us give meaning to the collective ideals, principles and values."

"The next generations will judge our patriotism, assessing not only the honors we paid to our predecessors but what we ourselves did for our country. Let us, then, leave something to this land. Let us measure our contribution, and let us be measured on the magnitude and quality of our contribution," the President urged.

The October 28 "Ochi Day" national holiday, commemorating the anniversary of Greece's resounding "Ochi" (no) to then Italian dictator Mussolini's demand for free passage to invade Greece during World War II, which brought Greece into the war on the Allied side, is celebrated throughout the country with students' parades and church services. On Oct. 28, 1940, fascist Italy presented Greece with the ultimatum, but Greek leader Ioannis Metaxas tersely refused, and the country not only denied Mussolini's forces free passage, it went on the offensive in mid-November and drove the opposing forces back through part of southern Albania.

The main events and traditional military parade take place in Thessaloniki, which also celebrate the anniversary of its liberation from Ottoman rule in 1012 and the October 26 feast day of its patron Saint Demetrius.

[02] Flooding in Pieria, Imathia

Ten people were trapped in their cars, which were swept away by torrents on the roads, and required the assistance of the Brigade to remove them by boat.

Tens of homes and shops were flooded in the two prefectures, while severe damage was caused to infrastructures, crops, storage facilities, sheep pens and irrigation works.

Despite heavy flooding in the town of Dion, the nearby archaeological site has not suffered damage and is in operation, according to Pieria prefect George Papastergiou.

The prefect said the rainfall and weather conditions in the region were "unprecedented", and has petitioned that the municipalities of Dion, Eastern Olympos, Litochoro, Petra and Elafina by designated as "flood-stricken" areas.
