[01] Greek school inaugurated in ZambiaFuture students of the Greek school in Lusaka Zambia on Wednesday 13 May 2009. The school was financed by the Greek Foreign Ministry General Directorate for International Development Cooperation (Hellenic Aid) and was constructed by the non-governmental organisation European Audiovisual Network (EURONEM). Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa inaugurated the new 750 sq.m elementary school in Lusaka, which facility features seven classrooms and two teacher lounges. ANA-MPA/SOPHIA ARAVOPOULOU[02] South Stream accordThe agreement for the construction of the South Stream natural gas pipeline will be signed between Gazprom and all the other participants in the project in the Russian resort city of Sochi on the shores of the Black Sea, Greek development minister Costis Hatzidakis announced on Wednesday after a meeting with Russian ambassador in Athens Vladimir Chkhikvishvili.Hatzidakis accepted an invitation conveyed by the Russian ambassador, and will represent Greece at the signature ceremony, at which DESFA, a subsidiary of the Greek Natural Gas Organisation, will be signing on behalf of Greece. In statements after the meeting with Chkhikvishvili, Hatzidakis noted the particular importance placed by the Athens government on cooperation with Russia, and particularly on the South Stream agreement. "With my presence at the ceremony, we want to underscore Greece's interest in the pipelines policy and, naturally, more generally in our cooperation with Russia," Hatzidakis said. The Russian ambassador, in turn, said that "we are on the even of a very important event, which is the signing of the agreement in Sochi", adding that the accord was proof of the very good overall cooperation between the two countries, and more particularly in the energy sector. Replying to press questions, the two officials affirmed that the timetables that have already been announced were in effect, according to which the pipelline will begin operation in 2015. Hatzidakis also noted that the fact that the parties involved were proceeding to the establishment of the company that would be running the project indicated that all sides participating in the program are determined to take the steps required. He further noted that the matters concerning the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline were also progressing smoothly. The South Stream pipeline will transport Russian natural gas from the Black Sea to the coasts of Bulgaria, and from there it will branch out to the North via Serbia and to the South via Greece, to western Europe. Gazprom and DESFT will hold equal stakes of 50 percent each in the company that will construct the Greek section of the pipeline. Caption: [03] ASE opening: DeclineEquity prices were declining at the opening of trade on Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), with the basic share price index down 1.57 percent, standing at 2,102.85 points at 10:45 a.m., and turnover at 17.3 million euros.Individual sector indices were moving mostly downward, with the biggest losses in Financial Services, down 3.78 percent; Industrial Products, down 2.99 percent; and Raw Materials, down 2.48 percent. The biggest gains were in Food & Beverage, up 1.73 percent; Insurance, up 1.25 percent; and Public Utilities, up 0.35 percent. The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was down 1.78 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was down 1.84 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was down 0.88 percent.
