  • [01] Attack against police station in Korydallos, caller claiming to represent Revolutionary Struggle group phones newspaper

Unknown gunmen opened fire on a police station in Korydallos, near Piraeus, at dawn Tuesday, causing damage but no injuries. The attack was later claimed by the "Revolutionary Struggle" organization in an anonymous telephone call to an Athens newspaper.

According to early reports, three or four unknown assailants fired a number of shots at the police station, at approximately 4:15 a.m., and also threw a hand grenade, which did not explode. The assailants immediately fled the scene, and the police counter-terrorism squad was investigating the incident.

Later in the morning, an anonymous caller phoned an Athens daily and claimed the attack on behalf of the Revolutionary Struggle group. The call was being investigated by the counter-terrorism as to its validity, given that the organization usually does not assume responsibility for its attacks in telephone calls. Police officials are convinced, however, that the incident was a terrorist act.

Early reports also indicated that the firearm used was most likely a 9mm hand gun, while the hand grenade was an eastern-made offensive grenade, which is used for blast effect.

Police said that three or four assailants approached the police station and opened fire with an automatic gun, and as they left threw a handgrenade, which did not explode.

The gun, according to initial information, was most likely a 9mm automatic weapon. The cartridges, handgrenade and other finds were being examined at the police crime lab, which will also ascertain whether the finds match guns used by Revolutionary Struggle in the past.

Police said the bullets impacted the wall of the police station between the guard post where a special guard was on duty and the duty officer's office.

After the attack, the assailants fled the scene on foot and escaped using means as yet unknown.
