Please find below the relevant press release. The project eMPOWER: «Empowering citizens to influence the decision making and policy formulation on environmental issues», is an eParticipation project co-funded by the European Commission under the eParticipation 2008/1 Preparatory Action, programme. The project eMPOWER aims to motivate and strengthen the involvement of NGOs and citizens in the decision-making process on environmental issues at a National and European level by providing methods and tools for supporting citizensβ participation to promote relevant public initiatives and demands of civil society. The project brings together three environmental organizations (MedSOS, Circolo Festambiente, Liga para a Proteccao da Natureza) and three News Agencies (Athens News Agency (ANA), Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA) & Ag?ncia de Not?cias de Portugal (LUSA)) from Greece, Italy, and Portugal respectively, as well as the National Technical University of Athens from Greece, and POLITECH Institute from Belgium. The project is coordinated by Athens Technology Center S.A (http:www.atc.gr), an IT company based in Athens, Greece. The project started in January 1st, 2009 and will run for 2 years. [02] EU Commission report on GreeceEconomic activity continued growing with rates above the Eurozone average, around 3.0 pct in 2008, the European Commission said in its extraordinary forecasts for the Greek economy. The Commission stressed, however, that economic activity slowed in 2008, particularly in the second half of the year, mainly due to a decline in domestic demand, while export of services -mainly transport- fell significantly.The EU's executive said activity was expected to be affected by an international economic crisis and that economic growth would be very slow in 2009 fully dependent on domestic demand. In an uncertain environment in international markets, a worsening of credit terms was expected to reduce private consumption, while investments were expected to fall further, the Commission said. The Commission said a worsening economic environment in the Eurozone and SE Europe, combined with an increase in labour unit costs above the Eurozone average, will affect exports in 2009, while services in the sectors of transport and tourism were becoming more vulnerable to a negative international environment. The country's trade deficit was projected to remain above 12.5 pct of GDP throughout the forecast period. The EU's executive said a slowdown in economic activity would lead to an almost zero growth in employment by 2010, while unemployment levels were expected to rise. Inflationary pressures are projected to ease in 2009, although wages and labour unit cost would continue growing at relatively high levels leading to a significant fall in profits. The country's fiscal deficit is expected to reach 3.7 pct of GDP this year, based on a less favourable growth scenario, to surpass the 4.0 pct of GDP level in 2010.
