  • [01] Papandreou on NATO summit outcome

Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou on Friday said his party's stance had helped ensure a good result for Greece with respect to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) NATO entry, by promptly laying out and insisting on the "red lines" in terms negotiations.

"In Bucharest we averted a negative development for our nation's interests. Greece was forced to defend itself and did so. We, as always, did our duty, as did the government in Bucharest," Papandreou said.

He stressed that the main opposition's stance and actions had strengthened Greece's voice in all directions up until the last moment, thus contributing decisively to the formation of a united front for the nation.

"We formed a front that helped Greece during the crucial hour at Bucharest. That is what we did and what we are doing," PASOK's leader emphasised.

He also stressed that the ultimate goal was not to raise a veto but to find a solution to the issue of FYROM's name, and thus enhance security and stability in the surrounding region.

"Negotiations, always under the auspices of the United Nations, must continue with seriousness, determination, responsibility and clear messages toward all," Papandreou said.
