[01] Tsipras tours N. Greece
"Initiatives must be taken now for contacts and talks aimed at reaching
a solution to a problem that should have been resolved many years ago
but unfortunately is still pending," Coalition of the Left, Movements
and Ecology (SYN) party leader Alexis Tsipras said on Friday, referring
to the FYROM name issue. On the Bucharest NATO Summit conclusions and
the fact that FYROM did not receive an invitation for membership to the
alliance, he pointed out that SYN would have been happy if the problem
had been resolved, adding, however, that it had never expected that the
dispute with the neighboring country could be resolved within the
framework of NATO enlargement and the US aspirations in the region. He
warned that those aspirations "are very alarming for our national
interests and for the wider Balkan region's prospects for security and
stability. The SYN leader visited the Thessaloniki Bar Association and
was briefed by president Manolis Lamtsidis on the problems faced by the
legal profession and on the lawyers' strike, which is det to continue
until April 16, in protest to the social security reform law. Tsipras
told reporters that the law will not be implemented because the
majority of society is against it. He also stated that SYN will press
on with a campaign backing a referendum on the social security reform.
Tsipras visited the facilities of SIDENOR SA steel industry and Nestle
Hellas food company, while he is also scheduled to tour the prefectures
of Imathia and Pieria. His three-day tour of central Macedonia,
northern Greece, will wind up with an address to a gathering of party
supporters in Thessaloniki on Sunday noon.
[02] Mt. Athos monastery recipes
The cooking style of the Mt Athos monastic community in Halkidiki,
northern Greece, is a model of healthy diet at a time when more and
more Greeks are turning to fast-food. The secrets of monastery cuisine
are unveiled in the cookbook "The Cooking of Mt Athos" written by Mt
Athos monk Epiphanios Mylopotaminos. It includes roughly 130 recipes
for fish, seafood, and ladera (vegetable, legume (pulses), and other
non-meat dishes cooked with olive oil). Monk Epiphanios cooks in the
fireplace or a wood stove, and uses only olive oil and no
preservatives. In his book presentation held in Thessaloniki, he said
that it is important to take the time to gather the ingredients needed
and cook, stressing that love for the people we are cooking for is a
basic element for tasty cooking.
[03] Snow in central Macedonia
Heavy snow was falling Friday in the mountainous regions of central
Macedonia, northern Greece, with low temperatures and rain in
Thessaloniki and the surrounding area.
