Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis conferred Thursday with Tourism Development Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos at the Maximos Mansion, the government headquarters, in Athens. After the meeting, Spiliotopoulos stressed that they had exchanged views on tourism development and the prospects for Greece's tourism product considering the increasingly competitive environment. He stressed that Greece is focused on diverse and viable tourism combined with a well-targeted promotion campaign.

On Wednesday, Karamanlis chaired a meeting of the inner cabinet that approved the national spatial plan presented by Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister George Souflias and a meeting of the Government Council on Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) that named Lt.-Gen. Vassilis Tsiatouras as the new chief of the Greek Police.

"Greece has for the first time acquired a comprehensive spatial plan," Souflias said in statements after the meeting, adding that the plan he presented was one of the most important reforms to take place in Greece in the last decades and would allow Greece to achieve well-rounded development with absolute respect for the environment.

"This means, quite simply, that everyone will know what they can do and where and all activities will have rules that are known in advance," he stressed.
