  • [01] KKE on Papandreou

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) said in an announcement on Saturday, referring to an address made by PASOK leader George Papandreou at a meeting of party youth members earlier in the day, that KKE will continue to say things as they are, no matter how much PASOK's leader is irritated.

"The leadership of PASOK has the same anti-popular strategy as that of the New Democracy party. These parties are parties of capital and they cannot change. The popular forces must abandon both of them," KKE said in its announcement.

"As regards the 'love and hate' relationship being developed between PASOK and the Coalition (Synaspismos) and concerning their role in 'centre-left' scenarios, with the aim of trapping the people in solutions that are useful for the plutocracy, KKE will not participate in them, but will oppose them," it added.

Lastly, on the question of former culture ministry secretary general Christos Zachopoulos, KKE said "the Greek people do not have to ask themselves who is deceiving who in this case as well. It is certain that all the links of the system, from the government, to the main opposition party and to the mass media, are deceiving them."

    [02] FinMin Alogoskoufis interviewed

Finance and Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis, speaking in an interview with the newspaper "Kosmos tou Ependiti", commented on talk of scandals taking place recently and stressed that "the effort to involve (prime minister) Costas Karamanlis and his associates is groundless and, as was the case with other similar cases in the past, it will fall through."

Alogoskoufis added that "Karamanlis is a longterm leader and a politician who, with the wise way with which he handled politics while in the opposition, as well as the way with which he is handling politics as the country's prime minister, will be one of few politicians who will have the opportunity of contesting a third government tenure with good prospects."

The minister further said that "this will take place regardless of whatever developments take place in the opposition, or of whatever efforts for scandal talk by whatever centres."

Lastly, on the question of whether a government reshuffle should take place or new elections, Alogoskoufis said "the government has been elected recently to implement a specific programme. And this is what it is doing, it will continue to do this and through the implementation of this programme it will contest victory again in the elections when their time comes, that is still far away. As regards 2008 in particular, that is the first and probably the most crucial year for the implementation of a government programme, we must continue the initiatives that we have taken and we shall continue them."

    [03] Ports halt sailings

Ships will not be sailing from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina on Saturday as well, since sailings to and from the islands of the Aegean and Crete have been cancelled due to gale force winds reaching as much as force 10.

Sailings in the Ionian Sea, off the west coast of Greece, are also facing problems as a result of strong winds prevailing in the region.

The National Meteorological Service forecasts heavy rain and storms in the eastern and southern Peloponnese, the Cyclades islands and Crete. Rainfall is also expected in the eastern Sterea region, in central Greece, Evia, the Dodecannese islands and the southern islands of the eastern Aegean.

The Civil Protection General Secretariat calls on people to take into serious consideration weather conditions, which might cause problems in many cases.
