  • [01] Christmas carols for PM Karamanlis

The city of Athens' childrens choir, accompanied by noted composer George Katsaros, sang Christmas Carols on Wednesday for Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, his wife Natassa and their children.

The prime minister's family was treated to several versions of carols from various parts of Greece, before handing out Christmas presents to the children of the choir and musicians.

The childrens choir of Athens took first place at the "Choir Olympiad" held in Austria last summer.

[02] Toddler in stolen car found unharmed

A 2.5-year-old boy inadvertently kidnapped when a thief stole his mother's car earlier on Wednesday in a suburb outside the northern city of Thessaloniki was found safe and unharmed by police a short time later. The car, with the toddler inside, was abandoned on the Thessaloniki-Veria highway, and according to police, the thief apparently decided to leave the car and the child when he realised that a manhunt had been launched for the missing child. The mother had parked her car outside a supermarket, leaving both the keys on the ignition and her child in the back seat, something the thief apparently didn't realise in time. No information was available on whether charges will be filed against the child's mother.

[03] Hutchison withdraws interest for Thessaloniki Port container terminal

Hutchison Port Holdings on Tuesday said it was withdrawing interest from a concession of Thessaloniki Port's container terminal, without disclosing the reasons behind its decision.

In an announcement released late on Tuesday by the Thessaloniki Port Authority, it was announced that the consortium -- comprising of Hutchison Port Holdings Limited, Hutchison Port Investments SARL, Alapis ABEE and LYD SA -- was withdrawing its interest from the tender.

The consortium was declared as temporary winner of the tender after offering a bid of 419.5 million euros for the Thessaloniki port's cargo terminal, far more than 131.9 million euros offered by Cosco, the runner-up in the tender.

    [04] KKE leader with carolers

Members of a group of African women residing in Athens, along with their children, sang Christmas carols on Wednesday for Communist Party of Greece (KKE) leader Aleka Papariga at the communist party's headquarters in the Perissos district of Athens.

Papariga called for measures by the state to grant naturalisation rights to the children of non-EU third country migrants born in Greece

    [05] Patriarch's Christmas wishes

Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos stressed in his Christmas message on Tuesday that most people's hope that has been based on worldly "gods" is collapsing in a pitiful way every day.

"The human image is being humiliated and crushed in the midst of numbers, machines, computers, stock exchanges and multicoloured flags of void ideologiocal convenience. Nature is being abused. The environment is suffering likewise. Young people are disappointed and rising in protest over the injustice of the present and the uncertainty of the future," he said in his message.

"However, the Church, calling on all for wise circumspection, the reassessment of priorities on life and seeking in the face of the transient "other" traces of the worthy of all respect image of God, will not cease to denounce with all the strength given to it by its experience exceeding two thousand years that the Child lying in the cradle of Bethlehem is 'the hope of all the extremities of the world'," he added.
