  • [01] ASE opening: Sharp rise

    Equity prices were rising at the opening of trade on Monday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), influenced by the international money markets, with the basic share price index up 3.72 percent, standing at 1,855.06 points at 10:45 a.m., and turnover at 12.2 million euros.

    Individual sector indices were moving upward across the board, with the biggest gains in Industrial Products, up 12.05 percent; Raw Materials, up 4.24 percent; Banks, up 4.21 percent; Construction, up 3.91 percent; and Health, up 3.66 percent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 4.09 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 2.47 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 2.95 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 86 were up, 5 were down, and 17 were unchanged.

    The riots in Athens and a handful of other Greek cities that erupted after the shooting death of a 15-year-old teen by a policeman on Saturday dominated the headlines on Monday in Athens' newspapers.
