[01] Papandreou received by Metropolitan of AustriaMain opposition PASOK leader and Socialist International (SI) president George Papandreou visited the historic Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Vienna on Monday night, where he was received by Metropolitan Michael of Austria and Ecumenical Patriarchate Exarch for Hungary and Middle Europe.Papandreou, as SI president, earlier chaired the first meeting of the SI-sponsored Stiglitz Committee that discussed the formulation of the world's progressive political forces' proposal for exit from the global financial crisis. He was due to fly to Brussels on Tuesday, where he will meet with European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, and also attend an extroardinary meeting of the European socialist parties' leaders on Wednesday. Caption: ANA-MPA file photo of main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou [02] ASE: Strong RiseEquity prices were rising on Tuesday on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), influenced by the major European markets, with the basic share price index up 2.79 percent, standing at 2,177.73 points at 12:15 a.m., and turnover at 63.8 million euros.Individual sector indices were moving upward across the board, with the biggest gains in Travel & Recreation, up 5.99 percent; Industrial Products, up 4.40 percent; Technology, up 3.41 percent; Banks, up 3.16 percent; and Food & Beverage, up 2.96 percent. The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 3.02 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 1.80 percent, and the FTSE/ASE-80 small cap index was up 3.48 percent. Of the stocks moved, 145 were up, 33 were down, and 20 were unchanged.
