[01] ND Central Committee convenes
Ruling New Democracy (ND) party Central Committee will convene at
10:30 on Friday at a downtown Athens hotel. The meeting will open
with an address by the Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, after which
Central Committee's members will outline their positions. The
Central Committee will also discuss planning for the party's future
actions and activities.
[02] Customs staff end strike
An Athens First Instance Court late Thursday declared an ongoing strike
by custom officers as illegal, amid a widespread petrol shortage around
the country.
According to reports, union representatives for striking customs staff
voted to suspend their indefinite strike
[03] Doping law ratified
The Parliament ratified in its entirety on Thursday the bill on
violence at sports venues and on doping.
Culture Minister Mihalis Liapis, referring to his decision to
withdraw the amendment on the implementation of proportional
representation in elections for members of the boards of sports
federations, said that "this issue does not only touch Greek law. It
also has parameters abroad."
The minister further said that "from the moment that the federations
are in a developing elections phase we shall give them time. There
must be order in the federations, there should be democratic
processes and transparency. However, to avoid mistakes on issues
concerning FIFA, UEFA and the International Olympics Committee, a
dialogue must be held with the federations to enable them to assume
their responsibilities."
