[01] Parliamentarism is 'the heart of democracy'Prime minister Costas Karamanlis met on Monday with parliament president Dimitris Sioufas, who briefed the premier on matters concerning operation of Parliament and the parliamentary work.Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sioufas said he also informed the prime minister on the "successful manner in which the revised Rules of Parliament functioned". He added that, with the completion of implementation of the new regulations, parliament would be upgraded, as would the roles of the MPs. Asked to comment on the self-sufficiency of the parties and the reservations expressed by some deputies, Sioufas explained that the citizens express reservations and make criticism on certain aspects of the operation of the political system. He said that, from his experience as president of parliament, it was everyone's duty to take care of and support the course of parliamentarism, "which is the heart of democracy", because democratic operation, and the restoration of democracy, was the institution that gave stability and a better period, as well as peace and development and prosperity, and, most importantly, political stability. A political stability that, in his opinion, emanated from self-sufficient and strong governments, and would continue to do so in the future, Sioufas concluded.
