The Greek government on Tuesday set in motion processes for monitoring the country's greenhouse gas emissions in compliance with Greece's obligations under the Kyoto Protocol, after a meeting initiated by the agricultural development and foods ministry.

In a meeting of ministry officials proposed by Deputy Agriculture Minister Constantine Kiltidis and attended by Deputy Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister Stavros Kalogiannis, the government decided on a series of steps to set up monitoring mechanisms.

These included the creation of a committee to coordinate ministry's services in order to collect the necessary data and to collect data on emission and absorption of greenhouse gases from the land use sectors, the changes of land use and forestry by creating a national system of records.

Kiltidis stated that there is evidence concerning the crucial role played by forests in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which will help Greece avoid paying high fines related to emissions targets.
