  • [01] Demetrius receives McCain

    Archbishop of America Demetrius had a half-hour meeting with Senator John McCain, Republican Party candidate for the U.S. presidency, at the offices of the Archbishopric in Manhattan, on Tuesday.

    During the meeting, topics discussed included American domestic and foreign policy, matters related to religious freedoms, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Cyprus issue and the name issue of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). (source: www.ana.gr)

    [02] Employment Minister in Geneva

    Greece's Employment Minister Fani Palli-Petralia addressed the 97th International Labour Conference held in Geneva on Tuesday and referred to the reforms in Greece's Social Insurance System.

    The Greek minister further referred to the creation of the National Social Cohesion Fund but also the incorporation of all "in a society of equal opportunities, in a strong economy which will create greater shares which will be distributed in a fairer way to all."

    She stressed that "dignified labor constitutes a factor of stability and sustainable growth, a fact which constitutes a central target of the International Labor Organization."

    "Greece implements its developmental planning, which brings about countable results on all levels. Indicatively, I refer to the high growth rate and the reduction of unemployment, on the basis of structural reforms which serve a final target," Palli-Petralia added. (source: www.ana.gr)

    [03] FinMin meets BoG chief

    Economy and Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis met on Wednesday with outgoing governor of the Bank of Greece (BoG) Dr. Nicholas Garganas, whose term expires at the end of the month.

    Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Alogoskoufis thanked the central bank chief for their cooperation throughout Garganas' term, and noted that the BoG governor had held the post during a very criticial period of time.

    He praised Garganas as having been an "excellent" central bank governor, adding that his attitude had been "very useful" on the formulation of economic policy.

    Garganas, too, said his cooperation with Alogoskoufis throught his years at the helm of the Bank of Greece had been "excellent", not only at personal level but also at institutional level.

    He said it was in the country's interests that the Bank of Greece collaborate with the economy ministry, adding that Alogoskoufis was one of the best economy ministers he has known, and has done important work in the sector of fiscal policy.

    Garganas called on everyone to support his work "because the global and Greek economies are at a very difficult juncture".

    "There is no problem that cannot be confronted with the appropriate economic policy," Garganas added.(source: www.ana.gr)

    [04] Hatzidakis on General Aviation

    Transport and Communications Minister Costis Hatzidakis held talks on Tuesday with Eurocontrol general director David MacMillan and IAOPA president Phil Boyer, focusing on the better management of the United European Sky to avoid delays in civil aviation flights, as well as on issues concerning General Aviation.

    The two are in Athens to participate in the 24th IAOPA International Congress on the theme of General Aviation, that is taking place in Greece this year.

    Hatzidakis said that General Aviation is a sector in which Greece must show special interest, since it can contribute considerably to the boosting of the tourist wave.(source: www.ana.gr)
