  • [01] Measures against price hikes

Development Minister Christos Folias on Thursday unveiled a series of extra measures against uncontrolled price increases.

Speaking during a press conference, during which seven more measures out of a total of 41 aimed at cracking down on high prices were announced, said that "everyone must assume the responsibilities due to him. We have assumed ours. We are not playing with words, the ultimatum is determined by society," while appealing to social responsibility that businesses must have.

The development minister, together with Deputy Economy Minister Antonis Bezas and Deputy Development Minister George Vlachos, announced that he called on the representatives of about 40 industrialists with whom he met in the morning to inform him shortly for which products price decreases can take place.

The minister pointed out that in essence it is a matter of a proposal of self-regulating to industry and stressed that there is no question of a "gentlemen's agreement."

He also revealed that the company representatives appeared to be realising the existing problem adding that more meetings with company representatives will follow.

The development minister once again stressed that the 41 measures supplement each other, all of them will be implemented in full and all of them together will produce results.

As regards the measures aimed at restricting high prices, it was mentioned that 20 of them have already been applied and seven more are following.

A system of two-line cheques will be implemented to monitor false sale prices, whatever rebates provided will be listed in invoices, circulars will be promoted on checking products to be used for animal food, the Agricultural Development ministry will be informed of products in inadequate supply and probes will ascertain whether the demand is real or not, products imported from third countries will be supplied with supporting documents revealing their country of origin and their pricing, every packaged product will be supplied with a label listing its sale price and, lastly, products in their initial stage of packaging will have a unit price (kilo, litre) wherever necessary to protect consumers from packaging scams.
