[01] 2008 budget to be tabled in parliament on Tuesday afternoon
Prime minister Costas Karamanlis will chair a meeting of the Inner
Cabinet in the early afternoon to discuss the 2008 state budget, which
will be tabled in parliament later by national economy and finance
minister George Alogoskoufis, after which he will give a press
conference presenting the budget in detail.
Karamanlis also chaired an Inner Cabinet meeting earlier in the day on
issues falling under the competency of the interior ministry, after
which he will confer with foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis.
The new budget foresees a reduction in the general state deficit in
2008 against 2007, which will result from a containment of expenditures
in tandem with an increase in revenues.
The increase in revenues is expected to arise from a containment of tax
evasion and confrontation of illicit trade in the fuel sector.
The new budget will also incorporate the revenues to arise from the
implementation of the Uniform Real Estate Tax, which will enter into
effect as of 2008.
