[01] Leftist leader wants referendum on reform treaty
Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader Alekos Alavanos on Friday
called for a referendum in Greece and the other European Union
member-states on the EU's reform treaty, currenty being discussed in
Lisbon at an informal EU summit.
Speaking in Hania on the sidelines of a visit to the Crete naval base,
Alavanos said that approval of the reform treaty appeared likely on
Friday, the second day of the two-day informal EU summit, adding that
the reform treaty preserved the "spirit and essence" of the
Euro-Constitution, "in other words a Europe of the uncontrolled market;
a Europe that undermines the public sector and social state, and a
Europe that is a satellite of the United States".
In that sense, he added, SYRIZA was against the treaty because "it does
not express our directions for a Europe of democracy, social progress
and peace", and reiterated his party's position that it would be
inconceivable to advance the draft reform treaty being discussed by the
EU leaders without prior referenda in all the EU member countries,
including Greece.
