  • [01] Almunia satisfied with deal on revised Greek GDP

EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia late Monday expressed satisfaction over an agreement reached a few hours earlier between the Greek and EU services on revised GDP figures for Greece.

Speaking in Luxembourg after a meeting of eurozone finance ministers, Almunia said the agreement between the EU's statistics service Eurostat and Greece's national statistics service was an example of correct cooperation between the two sides, while he assessed that the increase in Greek GDP would be approved in the near future by the relevant EU committee.

Almunia also cited efforts Greece has made in order to achieve fiscal balance by 2010, while regarding the draft 2008 state budget -- recently tabled in Parliament -- he described it as positive and ambitious with respect to further reductions of Greece's fiscal deficit, noting however, that risks of deviations from the target also existed.

Greece's Gross Domestic Product, with a base year of 2000, grew by 9.6 percent, according to revised figures by the country's statistical service, which were released on Monday.

The Greek agency said the figure was the result of cooperation between Eurostat and its services, in the framework of the European Statistics System. The cooperation completed a revision of the national accounts system with a base year of 2000. The revision was based on a 2001 census and a new series of updated statistics of primary research in commerce, transport, construction and hotel sectors.
