  • [01] First exit polls show New Democracy lead in Greek general elections

    At 19.00 (17:00 GMT) the six major television channels in Greece transmitted results of the first exit polls to be released immediately after the polls closed on Sunday's general elections. Results showed ruling New Democracy in the lead over rival PASOK, with substantial increases in the percentages posted by smaller parties in respect to the March 2004 election, including the neophyte Popular Orthodox Rally (LA.OS) party, which appears set to enter Parliament.

    The percentages received by the five top political parties are:

    Election Day on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, expectedly dominated the front-pages of Athens' dailies the same day, as voters across Greece headed to the polls to elect a new government.

    ADESMEFTOS TYPOS: "Sea of people for national unanimity - Mandate to Karamanlis for continuation of the reforms".

    APOGEVMATINI: "Karamanlis: Worthy of the nation's confidence - Guarantee for political stability, calm climate and growth, with social justice".

    AVRIANI: "PASOK will change leader if it loses the elections - Rapid developments in the main opposition party caused by its apparently imminent electoral defeat".

    ELEFTHEROS TYPOS: "Strong governance or misadventure - What the citizens demand of the next government - The great national expectations demand strength, determination and consensus".
