[01] KKE leader brings campaign to shipyard[02] Leftist leader blasts PM, PapandreouCoalition of the Radical Left (Syriza) leader Alekos Alavanos on Friday blasted both Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou, in his final campaign press conference ahead of Sunday's general elections.Alavanos charged that if the prime minister had not had parliamentary immunity, the prosecutor would have taken action against him, on the basis of Article 181 of the Penal Code, for insulting a national symbol, noting that, at the ruling New Democracy (ND) party's rallies, the Greek flag was downwgraded by its replacement with plastic flags used as a political party symbol. Alavanos also sharply criticised Papandreou, commenting on the PASOK leader's recent speeches in which Papandreou said the elections were a "plebiscite" for getting rid of ND (from the government). "In essence, what Mr. Papandreou wants is to get rid of the Left," he said. He further said that nervousness prevailed within PASOK leadership because Syriza was being reinforced by citizens coming from PASOK. Alavanos also said Papandreou's announcement that (if elected) he would establish an autonomous ministry of the environment was "the shortest joke", since PASOK's policy to date "has been anything other than in favour of environmental protection". [03] Patriarch warns of Arctic eco damageEcumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos (Bartholomew) this week warned from Greenland that "time is almost up" for the Arctic Glacier, in an address during the conclusion of the 7th international symposium on the environment, entitled "The Arctic: Mirror of Life".The Ecumenical Patriarch stressed that if icebergs disappear in Greenland then consequences will be devastating for the entire world, repercussions of biblical proportions, as he said. The symposium was organised by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. "Humanity does not have the luxury to argue over economic, racial or religious differences," he added, stressing the need to take immediate action based on cooperation. Vartholomeos also blessed the Arctic lands and waters in a service held at the southwestern tip of the world's largest non-continent island, at the very site where the first Christian church in the New World was built as early as 1000 AD.
