The White House on Wednesday announced the nomination of Daniel V. Speckhard as the next US ambassador to Greece, replacing Charles Ries, whose term expires in mid-June.

Speckard is a career member of the senior executive service, and currently serves as a special advisor at the US embassy in Baghdad, having previously served as attache at the embassy. His nomination for the post by US president George W. Bush was formally announced on Wednesday, and the nomination has been forwarded to the US Senate for approval.

Speckhard studied at the University of Wisconsin, in his home state.

Mr. Speckhard currently serves as Special Advisor at the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Prior to this, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy in Baghdad. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Policy Planning for the Secretary General of NATO.
