[01] Alavanos: 'No post-election cooperation'Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) leader Alekos Alavanos toured Thebes in central Greece on Friday, where he stated that his party"will not have post-elections cooperation with any of the two major political parties," namely the New Democracy (ND) party and the PASOK party.The general elections are slated for September 16. He met with the mayors of Inofita and Schimatirio and discussed with them the region's ecological problems and toured a local plant. Alavanos also met with the board of the Thebes Labor Centre and gave a press conference. He noted there that "there is complete lack of governance in the country, there is no town planning, there is no environment office." The Synaspismos leader added that "the non-governance must stop. We need a road where health, quality of life and the environment will be the priorities." He also called on the government "to assume its responsibilities over the wildfires." [02] Munich pledges aid for OlympiaMunich mayor Christian Ude on Friday sent a letter to Greek President Karolos Papoulias announcing that his historic municipality wishes to undertake an initiative to contribute to the restoration of the Kronion Hill above Ancient Olympia, which was ravaged in recent wildfires.Ude said Munich's initiative would begin with a donation of 100,000 euros for restoration of the renowned wooded hill once dedicated to the mythical god Cronus, while local residents and companies would also be contributing to the effort. Munich is home to one of the largest ethnic Greek communities in Europe, outside Greece, while the city has important historical ties modern Greece. The initiative will be presented to Papoulias by Sigrid Skarapelis-Sperk, president of the Association of Greek German Companies, during an Association event scheduled for Sept. 5 at the presidential mansion. Meanwhile, letters and telegrams of support and condolences over the wildfires tragedy continued to pour into the president's office on Friday, from the presidents of Germany, Horst Koehler; Austria, Dr. Heinz Fischer; Poland, Lech Kazynski, Hungary, Laszlo Solyom, Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, Finland, Tarja Halonen, Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, Slovakia, Ivan Gasparovic, FYROM, Branki Crvenkovski, Korea, Roh Moo-hyun, and Armenia, Robert Kocharian; King Albert of Belgium; Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, as well as the mayor of the Turkish-occupied Cypriot town of Morfou, Haralambos Pittas; Francophony International Organisation secretary general Abdou Diouf; Mariupol University rector Constantine Balabanov and Orthodox Metropolitan Tarasios of Buenos Aires. Finally, the Athens city council on Friday accepted Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis' proposal to "adopt" the municipality of Ancient Olympia. Cooperation between the two municipalities has already begun with the delivery of food and basic necessities.
