[01] Papandreou blames gov't for ineffectiveness
Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou on Sunday laid blame at
the governmentâs feet over the unprecedented barrage of wildfires
erupting in the country since Thursday, charging that a lack of
organisation and coordination of state services led to the disaster.
Papandreou, a former foreign minister in previous PASOK governments,
visited several fire-ravaged areas of western Peloponnese on Saturday,
where he added that ?delays and ineffectiveness? plagued the
governmentâs response, while also claiming that a ?petty partisan
attitude? has crippled the security services.
He also charged that the government was responsible for ?cultivating
the expectations of illegal interests and land grabbers? with its
intention to revise Article 24 of the Constitution protecting forest
lands.
Finally, Papandreou again called for the convening of a political
leadersâ council under the chairmanship of the president of the
republic.
