  • [01] Latest major wilfire in greater Athens area reported

A wildfire broke out on Thursday morning in Nea Penteli site atop Mt. Penteli, one of three peaks overlooking the greater Athens area. According to television footage, the blaze was raging near the Aghios Panteleimonas monastery and had spread to nearby residences fanned by high winds. Dozens of firefighters, fire engines and fire-fighting aircraft were battling the blaze, the second major wildfire to hit the mountains surrounding Athens this summer season after a particularly devastating fire in June to hit Mt. Parnitha.

According to initial reports, at least two residents were burned in the Melissia district, along with a fire engine. Current efforts are centred on a handful of some of Athens' most upscale districts, such as Kefalari and Politeia. Additionally, hospitals and residences were being evacuated in the wider region.

A heavy reddish cloud, meanwhile, hung over Athens at around noontime, testament of the fire's extent.

[02] PM meets with top ministers on Thurs.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was holding a series of meetings on Thursday morning with senior government ministers, beginning with a discussion on all issues with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis. No statements were made after the one-hour meeting.

Karamanlis was also scheduled to meet consecutively with Economy and Finance minister George Alogoskoufis, and with Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas.

"We are in the middle of a difficult, upward path," Karamanlis said on Thursday, adding that his New Democracy (ND) government was determined to continue on that road.

[03] PASOK leader meets with Spanish FM

Main opposition PASOK leader and Socialist International (SI) president George Papandreou met Thursday with visiting Spanish minister of foreign affairs and cooperation Miguel Angel Moratinos.

Replying to reporters' questions, as he arrived earlier at the PASOK headquarters in downtown Athens for the meeting, on whether he "sees" early general elections, Papandreou replied that "I see victory" for PASOK.
