  • [01] PM Karamanlis urges EU to assume leading role in international affairs

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said on Sunday evening that in an era when Europe is called upon to confirm its identity and to option for directions and orientations, "the solid principles on which the European family was founded must become the central rule of our thoughts and actions."

Addressing the opening session of a two-day conference organised by the European Cultural Centre of Delphi on the triple occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of late statesman Constantine Karamanlis and the 50th anniversarry of the signing of the Treaty of Rome and the 30th anniversary of the centre's foundation, held at Delphi, the prime minister noted that Europe "must today assume a leading role in the effort of handling a series of complex and crucial international issues: war and impoverishment, deseases and regional inequalities, terrorism and climate change, which is perhaps the greatest challenge faced by humanity today."

"To the need of a modern competition of ideas for the present and future of Europe, Greece, the birthplace of the notion of Europe and of the principles on which the unified culture of our continent has been built, can and must contribute substantially within our Union's framework," Karamanlis said.

"Politics is vindicated in two ways: the first is when it manages to give solutions - tangibles, effective and countable - to existing problems faced by citizens in their everyday lives; the second is when it transcends the level of simple management. When it dares to make steps, to proceed to radical changes and reforms which not only answer to present day needs but also prepare for tomorrow. When politics, from an 'art of the feasible' becomes the art of expanding the feasible," he underlined.

"It is with this dimension that Constantine Karamanlis identified his personal course but also the course of Greece through history. At the same time he was giving reliable and effective solutions to pressing, everyday problems of the citizen, he also opened new, ambitious roads for the future.

"The developmental leap in the difficult years following WWII, the restoration and consolidation of Democracy after the seven-year dictatorship, the national reconciliation, the shaping and voting of the most democratic and liberal constitution ever adopted in the country, the definite solution of the regime of the country through popular vote and, of course, Greece's accession to the European family. All these are tokens of a politician who not only had a vision for the country's future but also knew how to realise it," Karamanlis added, referring to the contribution of Constantine Karamanlis.

Karamanlis also termed as "fortunate" the fact that Europe still continues "to bare politicians with a high feeling of responsibility, who honour and promote even further this great tradition," and referred to the presence at the event of European Union Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, who he termed as a friend.

[02] Wildfires reported as under control

Another bevy of wildfires was reported around the country on Sunday, with most either contained or extinguished completely, while one blaze erupted in mountainous Corinth prefecture - west of Athens - an area that experienced a particularly devastating string of fires over the past week.

Other wilfires were reported in the Keratea district southeast of Athens proper, as well as Elikona, Viotia prefecture; Domokos, Fthiotida prefecture, and at the Aghia Thekla site on the island of Zakynthos.

[03] KKE leader Papariga on Ikaria

Communist Party of Greece (KKE) general secretary Aleka Papariga on Sunday continued her visit to the eastern Aegean island of Ikaria, where she addressed party supporters.

Among others, Papariga again reiterated her statement of āpunishingā ruling New Demcracy and main opposition PASOK in the coming general elections, charging that both main parties in Greece merely ?serve plutocracy?.

In a rare yet sharp criticism of the ?globalisation? phenomenon, the communist leader noted that ?globalisation, in whose name we must all adjust to, is nothing more than capitalismās assault; itās international capitalism becoming more dangerous, more barbaric than ever, something that should not surprise us. ? KKE had warned about what would transpire,? she opined.

[04] Erdogan vows to press on with EU bid after poll

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan vowed to press on with Turkey's bid to join the European Union after voters gave his ruling AK Party a fresh five-year mandate in Sunday's parliamentary election.

"We will continue to work with determination to achieve our European Union goal," Erdogan told thousands of ecstatic supporters at his party's headquarters after unofficial results gave the AK Party some 47 percent of the vote.

"We will continue democratic reforms, economic development will continue," he said.
