  • [01] PASOK on course to certain victory, Papandreou says

Arriving in Aktio on Friday for the start of a four-day tour of northern Greece, main opposition PASOK leader stressed that his party was "on a new course for a new, great and certain victory".

Papandreou, who arrived in Aktio on Greece's western coast at midday, will follow the Egnatia highway along its length, arriving in the prefecture of Evros in northeastern Greece on Sunday night.

PASOK's leader chose the specific route in order to highlight, as he said, that "for us the regions are the beginning of Greece," and to base it on the Egnatia highway "which symbolises our views on the development of regions".

He said the party was on a new course to overturn the present government because, he added, "people can no longer put up with being fooled".

Commenting on the Egnatia highway project, meanwhile, Papandreou stressed that it was an "avenue to the future, which unites Greeks and bridges generations".

During his tour, Papandreou will stop briefly in Paramythia and will speak at an open meeting in the evening in Metsovo, the hometown of New Democracy's former leader Evangelos Averoff, and one of the most difficult electoral constituencies for the PASOK party.

[02] Soaring temperatures over the weekend

Soaring temperatures, which may climb as high as 43 degrees Celsius, are being predicted by the Greek weather service for this coming weekend. According to Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, all state services had been placed on standby to deal with problems that may arise due to the intense heat.

The Public Power Corporation (PPC), meanwhile, said that problems in the power supply were inevitable when there were high temperatures but they were not expected to be serious, since the networks had been properly maintained and improvements had been carried out.

The health ministry also sent out a circular to all hospitals in the country, advising them to be ready to activate the "Perseas" plan for dealing with emergencies during the summer months.

Meanwhile, the ministry and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection on Friday advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, to avoid unnecessary travel, to wear cool, comfortable and light-coloured clothing, as well as hats and sunglasses when going out.

Members of the public are additionally advised to prefer shady areas and to avoid working outdoors, to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and to eat light meals. Finally, extra caution is urged for the high-risk groups during a heatwave, which include babies, people over 65 and people with chronic health problems, who are advised to immediately contact their doctor or visit the nearest hospital or health centre if they feel seriously unwell.

In the capital, the Athens municipality has activated "Phaethon", its operational plan for dealing with heatwaves, and will leave the municipality's 19 air-conditioned "Friendship Clubs" open during the weekend, between 9:00 and 20:00.

It will also set up information booths at eight busy areas in Athens, which will distribute leaflets on how to deal with the heat, the addresses of the Friendship Clubs, free bottled water and hats between the hours of 11:00 - 14:00 throughout the weekend. The same information will be broadcast by the municipality's radio station 98.4 FM.

Similar measures have been taken by municipalities and communities throughout the country, according to reports coming in from all round Greece.

The public can also ask for information and assistance at the Athens Prefecture switchboard number 1539 between the hours of 8:00 and 20:00 or at the Athens Prefecture Civil Protection Office at the numbers 210 - 6984950 and 210 - 6984940.
