  • [01] PM meets with visiting Austrian President Fischer; briefed by Aegean minister

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was meeting with visiting Austrian President Heinz Fischer on Monday at his Maximos Mansion office, with a working lunch scheduled afterwards.

In the morning, the premier was briefed by Aegean and Island Policy Minister Aristotelis Pavlidis, with the focus on possible water shortages, resources for smaller islands as well as planning for the upcoming 4th CSF.

A day earlier on Sunday, Karamanlis emphasised that the government's high-profile reforms in the education sector are a "cornerstone" of his policy, in comments he made during a meeting in Athens with members of ruling New Democracy party's affiliated college students' group, DAP.

Following the passing of several high-profile reforms over recent months to rejuvenate the higher education sector as well as his government's volition to overturn Article 16 preventing the establishment of recognised non-profit, non-state universities -- all amid heated opposition by political parties, the professors' union and a portion of student groups -- Karamanlis on Sunday emphasised that that education changes are nevertheless supported by a "great majority of Greek society, beyond political parties".

The premier, who attended an outdoor event on a university campus ground in the Vyronas district, also congratulated members of the DAP grouping for picking up a majority of votes in last week's college student elections throughout the myriad of Greek universities and tertiary institutions.

Foreign ministry spokesman George Koumoutsakos stated that the meeting was taking place at the initiative of the Greek side and will focus on developments in the Middle East, whereas the recently surfaced Jerusalem Patriarchate issue will be discussed with the Jordanian envoy.

The foreign ministers of Jordan and the Palestinian Authority are in Brussels for an informal meeting between Arab League and EU representatives.
