  • [01] Focus turns to preventing sea pollution in Caldera

Stepped up efforts were continuing on Thursday limit the possibility of oil spillage in Santorini's renowned Caldera, the enclosed volcano-generated bay of the eponymous holiday island, following last week's unprecedented sinking of a luxury cruiseship during a bungled attempt by its skipper to dock off the isle's busy anchorage.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday a submersible craft was again sent down 130 metres to survey the wreck, as authorities said it was still impossible to send divers into the sunken vessel's interior.

Finally, Greece's merchant marine minister led a government delegation to the island, amongst the country's top tourist attractions, to coordinate efforts at preventing pollution from ruining the Caldera. Minister Manolis Kefaloyannis also praised local boat owners for their efforts to remove the passengers and crew of the vessel after it slammed into an underwater reef.
