  • [01] Energy issues to dominate prime minister's agenda on Wednesday

A series of meetings on energy issues and economic affairs are planned by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Wednesday, who is scheduled to meet Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis and visiting Gazprom chairman Alexei Miller during the morning.

After these, Karamanlis will have a meeting with Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas and the two men will later be joined by Public Power Corporation (PPC) president Panagiotis Athanasopoulos.

Early on Wednesday morning, meanwhile, the prime minister met Bavaria's vice premier and interior minister Dr Günther Beckstein.

PM and interior minister discuss response to earthquakes on Tuesday

A scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Tuesday was dominated by the flurry of earthquakes that hit the area of Lake Trichonida in western Greece the same day.

"We are ready to deal with the needs of local residents," the minister stated after the meeting.

Pavlopoulos briefed the prime minister on the response by state services, which he said had mobilised and were ready to deal with possible repercussions.

The regional general secretary was also in the area with state officials, he added, while civil engineers from the regional authority and other state organisations were inspecting buildings and schools.

The minister said that alternative premises would be found for schools if necessary, so that children would not miss any classes.

During the meeting with Karamanlis, Pavlopoulos also discussed a planned code for municipal and community employees.

Pointing out that there had been no new code for municipal employees since 1981, he said the one being drawn up now at the interior ministry would be based on the code for civil servants and introduce several innovations, while also establishing a proper hierarchy that would make municipal employees able to meet the requirements of the 4th Community Support Framework.

Other issues discussed at the meeting included the National Council for Immigration Policy that will meet in May in the framework of policies for the better integration of immigrants.

[02] Pilot run for Proastiako to Piraeus

Transport Minister Mihalis Liapis was on board the Proastiako suburban railway's first pilot run from Larisis Station to Piraeus, which took place on Wednesday morning.

Passengers boarded at 10:00 and the train departed from the station at 10:10 precisely, while there were stops during the journey to inspect the work still underway at the intervening stations.
