  • [01] PM Karamanlis to attend Treaty of Rome anniversary event in Berlin

Prime minister Costas Karamanlis leaves Saturday for Berlin, where he will attend the informal meeting of the EU Heads of State and Government celebrating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Community's founding Treaty of Rome.

At noon on Saturday, Karamanlis will take part in a meeting of the European People's Party (PPE, the Europarliament political group to which his ruling New Democracy party belongs), while on Saturday night he will attend a dinner in honour of the Heads of State and Government hosted by German President Horst Koehler.

On Sunday morning, Karamanlis will meet with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, after which he will attend the ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, and the signing event adopting the Declaration of Berlin which, although just short of three pages long, aspires to opening up a new chapter for the prospects of the venture called the European Union, and chiefly to help overcome the alienation between the existing structure and the citizens of the member states.

The Declaration will be signed symbolically by the heads of the EU's three institutional bodies: the European Council, the European Commission, and the European Parliament.

Later, Karamanlis will attend a working lunch of the Heads of State and Government.
