Main opposition PASOK on Thursday said that the management of Greece's ailing Olympic Airlines (OA) and the government had botched the handling of OA's case before the European Court of Justice and placed the airline's future in jeopardy.

PASOK's Dinos Rovlias, in charge of transport and telecommunications in PASOK's Parliamentary Council, said this led the court to turn down Greece's application to stay a Commission decision that ordered OA to pay back 452 million euros that the Commission considers illegal state subsidies.

Noting that the government had suffered a major defeat, he stressed that the application for a stay had been turned down by the EU Court of First Instance because OA had failed to prove the urgency of the case or that OA would suffer irreparable damage if the order were executed.

"This rejection, combined with the publicity given to this issue, could have an impact on OA's entire course," Rovlias said.

He called on the government to brief Parliament and the Greek people on its next moves and to "stop daily devaluing Olympic with its actions, omissions and mistakes".
