[01] Strikes to affect mass transports on Wed.Commuters in the greater Athens area will likely face problems getting around on Wednesday as a result of a 24-hour nationwide strike called by the two largest unions in the country, the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE) and the civil servants' union, ADEDY.The strike will affect the Athens metro network, the T-shaped tram line, the suburban railway and the older Piraeus-Kifissia electric train line, while the state-run Greek Railway Organisation (OSE) will only run a skeleton service. Trolley buses will carry out two work stoppages in Athens, as will the extensive bus service. Some problems are expected at Greek airports, as well, due to a work stoppage by civil aviation staff between 12:00-15:00 on Wednesday, which has already caused the cancellation of mostly domestic Olympic Airlines flights. [02] Athens on latest EU-Turkey developmentsThe government on Tuesday was again called on to comment on recent developments concerning EU-Turkey relations, a topic that has more-or-less dominated the foreign affairs limelight recently, with the government spokesman repeating that Athens' policy is condensed in the phrase of "complete fulfilment of obligations by Turkey for complete EU accession."Moreover, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said a recent decision by the EU's foreign ministers move in this direction. Meanwhile, in an ANA dispatch from Ankara, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul lamented the decision by the 25 EU member-states' foreign ministers to freeze eight chapters in EU-Turkey negotiations, saying it displays a lack of vision by the Union. Responding to a press question on whether Ankara will open its ports in case the EU opens direct trade with the Turkish Cypriot community, Gul stated that he would not refer to the benefits the Greek Cypriots would have from the opening of a Turkish port nor to benefits for the Turkish Cypriots in case an airport in the occupied areas opens to international flights. He said commenting would jeopardise ongoing Turkish diplomatic efforts. Gul added that "for me, however, what's important is to have results, namely, what steps we can impose on the EU over the future of the Turkish Cypriots."
