[01] SYN leader acccuses gov't of 'cynicism'Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) leader Alekos Alavanos on Saturday said that "the intention of the Culture Ministry to terminate the contracts of more than two thousand contract workers, despite their vindication by Justice, is a competely illegal act which aims at the creation of a private state of the (ruling) New Democracy (ND) party."Alavanos spoke of "mass purges of working people, an act which violates every meaning of labour rights and constitutes a coup by the executive power against justice and is an attempt of intimidation of judges." The Synaspsmos leader called on the government to "immediately revoke the Culture Ministry's document and to abandon this stance of cynicism and barbarity against the contract workers." (ANA-MPA file photo of Synaspismos leader Alekos Alavanos) [02] 'Elimination of Violence against Women'Justice Minister Anastasios Papaligouras attended events in Athens on Saturady marking 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women'. With the slogan "Defeat fear", the Justice Ministry started from early morning, at a special stand on Ermou Street, an awareness campaign by handing out briefing pamphlets on the four main reforms of the new law against domestic violence.Papaligouras headed the campaign and himself also handed out pamphlets and talked to citizens. "Phenomena of systematic violence in the home trouble one in four Greek families, a bleak reality which fear, shame or need covered up until today," said Papaligouras, noting that "the government's new law signals the State's decision to stand by the hundreds of thousands of women who until today remained defenceless and silent witnesses in their own home." Concluding, Papaligouras said that "the Justice Ministry sends them the message that they now have support, protection, an outlet and a voice." (ANA-MPA file photo of Justice Minister Anastasios Papaligouras) [03] President Papoulias begins visit to OmanPresident of the Republic Karolos Papoulias began on Saturday official visits to Oman and the United Arab Emirates. In his tour, the president is accompanied by government officials and a group of businessmen. Papoulias will stay at the Sultanate of Oman over the weekend, followed by a three-day visit to the United Arab Emirates.Papoulias' visits are a follow-up of his tour of Arab countries inaugurated last May by successive visits to Qatar, Bahrein and Saudi Arabia, aimed at reinforcing Greece's relations with the Arab world. Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kafaloyannis, Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stylianidis and Deputy Economy and Finance Ministers Christos Folias and Petros Doukas are part of the delegation. The Greek president in an arrival statement in Muscat described Greece's relations with Oman in the commercial, economic and cultural sector and in general expressed the hope for a multi-sided and multifarious development of relations between Greece and Oman. Immediately after his arrival at Muscat airport early Saturday afternoon local time, he went to Al Alam Palace, at the entrance of which he was welcomed by the country's leader, Sultan Qaboos bin Sa'id Al Bu Sa'id who will host an official dinner in honour of President Papoulias. Papoulias will have official talks with the Sultan on Sunday.
