  • [01] PASOK political council to assess election results

Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou will chair a meeting of his party's Political Council on Monday for an initial assessment of the results of the local government elections throughout Greece last Sunday and the run-offs in seven prefectures and 247 municipalities this Sunday.

Papandreou was in Helsiniki on Friday, where he held talks with the Finnish EU presidency on Turkey's EU accession course.

The accession negotiations now underway with Turkey should on no account lead to "discounts" in European values and standards, Papandreou stressed after his talks with the Finnish presidency of the EU, adding that his message was directed equally to all sides, including the Greek government.

Papandreou also had a meeting with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos on Friday morning, who was in Helsinki for an informal EU summit, while a week earlier he held talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"I will continue these efforts with the aim of making Turkey respect its obligations toward a member-state of the European Union, the Cyprus Republic," Papandreou told reporters after his meeting with Finland's Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.

[02] Ecumenical Patriarch on pilgrimage to Mt. Athos

Visiting Ecumenical Patrarch Vartholomeos on Sunday officiated at a Litany at the Protaton church in Karyes, the seat of the all-male monastic community on Mt. Athos, which was attended by Macedonia-Thrace minister George Kalantzis, deputy foreign minister Theodoros Kassimis, the commuity's civilian administration and its monks.

Kalantzis said afterwards that it was a great honour for him to accompany the Ecumenical Patriarch on his pilgrimate to Athos, while Kassimis described Vartholomeos' visit as important, particularly since it coincided with the Ecumenical Patriarch's initiatives on ecological issues and issues of concern to the international community.

Vartholomeos arrived on Athos, the "Holy Mount", on Saturday evening
