  • [01] Gov't eyes cuts in personal income tax

The government on Thursday pointed directly to tax cuts on personal incomes, less than a month before Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis gives the premier's customary state-of-the-country address at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), the venue where the broad strokes of economic policy for the coming year are mostly unveiled.

The possibility of tax breaks surfaced during a meeting between Economy Minister George Alogoskoufis and Deputy Minister (responsible for state revenues) Antonis Bezas, who merely noted that a draft bill will be tabled in October that includes tax cuts worth 150 million euros. Bezas also announced another series of simplifications of Greece's often complex tax code.

Meanwhile, in touching another major economic development in the news this week, Alogoskoufis said a 4.1-percent GDP growth rate recorded in the second quarter of 2006 will not change the government's initial forecast of an annual 3.8-percent growth rate.

Finally, the economy ministry echoed same-day statements by Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas, following his meeting with the prime minister earlier on Thursday, in ruling out a heating oil subsidy for the coming winter season.
