Papoutsis said that "in reality, Europe, as of today, is entering a period of discussions of extreme importance for the future of the EU and, as a matter of fact, the issue of the future European architecture, regional cooperation, cohesion and convergence is being raised again. Above all, however, the issue of the EU's ability to respond to the demands of citizens and the challenges of the future is being raised."

"The enlargement of the European Union certainly constitutes a great political option. It constitutes a strategic investment for peace, security, development and the common prosperity of the peoples of Europe," he said.

PASOK's official said that at this time the pursuits and national targets of member-states are being redefined and this is the new reality which "highlights the value of the proposal by (PASOK leader) George Papandreou on a new foreign policy, for a new national strategy" and for this reason, he added, "a substantive dialogue is necessary for Europe that we want, particularly for the younger generations, rationality and the redefining of foreign policy is required, in accordance with the new European developments and the new prospects."

He also stressed that references to the Council's text of Conclusions concerning Turkey constitute in reality a reminder of basic European commitments and it is certainly a positive step in the right direction.

KKE, SYN

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) on Friday evening commented on the outcome of the European Union Summit which ended earlier in the day in Brussels.

"The EU Summit was yet another Council of hypocricy and ridicule of the peoples and the promotion of the interests of oligarchy, but also another Council of contradictions between its member-states," the KKE said in an announcement.

On his part, Synaspismos' Political Bureau member Michalis Sabatakakis said that "the European edifice does not inspire confidence to the European citizens and this is the consequence of the policies exercised for years."

[02] Bank of Greece governor meets Serbian counterpart

The Serbian central banker addressed a seminar at the Bank of Greece on "Five years of transition: challenges and prospects of the Serbian economy".

During his speech, Jelasic made a detailed reference to macro-economic developments in Serbia in the period 2000-2005, to the positive results of a monetary policy implemented by the central bank and to a privatization process of the banking sector. He stressed that the four Greek banks, operating in Serbia, together have a market share exceeding 18 percent of the market, with very favourable growth prospects.

Jelasic also met with Greek banks' executives.

The Bank of Greece, in an announcement, stressed the significance placed on forging closer cooperation with the National Bank of Serbia. The two central banks have signed a memorandum of cooperation on bank supervision.
