  • [01] PM meets with ND parliamentary group sec't

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and ruling New Democracy Parliamentary Group Secretary Apostolos Stavrou discussed the revision of the Constitution and MPs' feedback from the country's provinces, during their meeting at Maximos Mansion on Friday.

In statements he made after the meeting, Stavrou said that because the prime minister will be in Thessaloniki for the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) summit meeting next week, the parliamentary group will not convene to discuss the revision of the constitution on Wednesday as scheduled.

It will, however, convene in the near future, according to Stavrou.

He also said that he conveyed to the prime minister the feedback gathered by the party's MPs, who during the Easter holiday travelled around the country.

The messages received were positive, Stavrou said, noting that citizens continue to support Karamanlis and the government's reforms.

Finally, he told reporters that he will ask ministers to meet regularly with MPs.

[02] FM, Turkish counterpart focus on bilateral economic ties

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul focused on bilateral economic relations during the meeting they had on the sidelines of the informal NATO foreign ministersâ meeting held here on Friday.

"This was one of many meetings we will have. We will be taking every opportunity to resolve outstanding issues and to discuss Turkeyâs European course," Bakoyannis said, clarifying that no political issues were raised during today's meeting.

Bakoyannis explained that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected in Thessaloniki next week to attend the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) summit meeting on the sidelines of which he will meet with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

Responding to a question on the likelihood of a visit to Turkey by Karamanlis, Bakoyannis stated that the issue will be settled through the diplomatic route.

Both foreign ministers placed particular emphasis on cooperation necessary to deal with the problem of the flooding of the Evros River in northern Greece.

The three countries affected by this situation - Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria - should work together to protect people and crops and to avoid a repeat of the disaster, Bakoyannis said.

The Greek minister also referred to bilateral business activities and cited the recent example of the stake National Bank of Greece bought in Turkey's Finansbank. She added that another Greek bank is preparing a similar venture.
