  • [01] Athens deserted in Easter exodus

Athens was deserted on Saturday as the annual Easter exodus from the capital ended with a near-record number of departures.

According to police, the mass exit from the city to the countryside was 10% higher than last year, and among the largest ever.

Traffic police throughout the country were on standby along national highways to assist motorists as the exodus from Athens and other Greek cities began.

Travellers found an ally in the weather that mostly remained fine during peak travelling times.

Measures to ease congestion were taken at all main junctions of the Athens-Corinth and Athens-Lamia highways leaving Athens; and emergency moves are planned for the return of holidaymakers at the usual problem re-entry points.

Police banned trucks over 1.5 tonnes from using national highways between 15:00 to 22:00 on Thursday and 8:00 until 13:00 on Friday last week.

All forms of public transport neared 100 percent of passenger capacity, with additional services scheduled to serve additional passengers on planes, boats and trains.

Authorities also conducted market inspections to protect public health and clamp down on profiteering.
