  • [01] FM Dora Bakoyannis to tour Balkans this week

Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis will tour several Balkan countries this week, while in published comments to an Athens daily, the newly appointed foreign minister revealed her first moves, which include receiving her Turkish counterpart in Athens, meeting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a visit to Nicosia and then to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). Bakoyannis pointed out that Athens' foreign policy will not change, while referring to Greek-Turkish relations, she said Greek interests are served by a European Turkey. Bakoyannis stressed that she had never asked for the foreign ministry and noted that the government is the victim of the phone-tapping conspiracy.

Her comments were carried in the Sunday edition of the newspaper "Vima".

[02] Parliamentary debate on unemployment on Mon.

An off-the-agenda debate on unemployment will take place in Parliament on Monday, at the initiative of the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Synaspismos) party. Speaking in Hania, Crete, on Saturday, Coalition party leader Alekos Alavanos criticised the government for its social policy and accused the main opposition PASOK party of consenting with major government options, while stressing that the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) is trying to exploit social struggles for party purposes.

Criticising the government, Alavanos said "it is turning us back to the early 20th century with the abolition of eight-hour work. With its militarised response to social struggles, as we saw recently with seamen, it is turning us back to the darkest moments of our modern history when social and political problems receive a military reply from authority."

[03] New ND party secretary to meet PM on Mon.

Newly-elected ruling New Democracy party Central Committee secretary Lefteris Zagoritis will be holding his first meeting with Prime Minister and party leader Costas Karamanlis at the Maximos Mansion on Monday. The new secretary also met with party officials at ND's head offices in Athens on Saturday and participated in a meeting of the Overseas Hellenism secretariat.

Zagoritis said the meeting shows the priority given by the party to overseas Greeks, adding that ND's Action Programme will be announced in due course and after he meets with his predecessor Vangelis Meimarakis and other party officials.

[04] Deputy DM pays visit to US aircraft carrier

Deputy Defence Minister Vassilis Mihaloliakos paid a courtesy visit to the US aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt on Saturday, which has anchored off the port of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. Albanian Defence Minister Fatmir Mediu and Greek foreign ministry secretary general Haralambos Rokanas also boarded the vessel.

Ruling New Democracy party Corfu Deputies Nikos Dendias and Nikos Georgiadis and representatives of the Greek and Albanian foreign ministries as well boarded the vessel with Mihaloliakos.

Two Greek soldiers slightly injured during an attack in Afghanistan also boarded the aircraft carrier, at the invitation of the U.S. embassy in Athens as being victims of terrorism.

The officials were welcomed by U.S. Ambassador to Athens Charles Ries. They were then briefed by the aircraft carrier's command on its activities.
