Main opposition PASOK leader George Papandreou on Thursday toured the ?Information Society S.A.? company in Athens, noting that the institution was inaugurated during a previous PASOK government.

He also said that upgrading the company's activities will be a top priority for any future PASOK government, while criticising the government for missing out on 150 million euros of Community funding for the sector, as he said.

Papandreou also referred to an initiative of two Greek professors at the Massachuessets Institute of Technology (MIT) to create a computer that would cost $100, making it accessible to all young adults.

"I was surprised to hear the Education Minister [Marietta Giannakou] say that Greece was not interested," he said.

    Government responds

Minister of the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation Prokopis Pavlopoulos responded to Papandreou's comments saying that Information Society SA has accomplished more in the past 18 months than it did between 2001 and 2004.

Regarding the absorption of EU funding, Pavlopoulos said that the problem had arisen under PASOK's governance. "Why is it that Mr. Papandreou, as a select member of the [former Prime Minister Costas] Simitis administration was not concerned then and failed to foresee the possibilities which he discovers today," Pavlopoulos asked.
