  • [01] Former president Kostis Stephanopoulos honoured by Achaia Prefectural Administration

Former president Kostis Stephanopoulos was honoured by the Achaia Prefectural Administration during a special event held at the Patra University's Convention Centre on Saturday night. The main speaker was Constitutional Law professor Dimitris Tsatsos who said "Kostis Stephanopoulos has set the bar for all the presidents to come as regards how they shall live and function", adding that "he succeeded in becoming a political and not a partisan president and did not allow parties to use him."

Stephanopoulos said it is one of the last times he will be speaking in public and stressed that "I have no role and reason to do this" and added that he greatly appreciates the present President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias.

The former president also said that more honours are being bestowed upon him than he deserves and pointed out that he could have done more.

The event was attended by local Parliamentary deputies, Patra Mayor Andreas Karavolas and Prefect Dimitris Katsikopoulos who offered Stephanopoulos a gravure of the region of the Peloponnese in the 17th century.

[02] Greek national soccer team leaves for Kazakhstan, optimism over Wednesday's match

The Greek national soccer team left for Kazakhstan on Sunday morning with renewed optimism following the dramatic 2-2 draw between Turkey and Denmark in a World Cup European zone group 2 match played in the neighbouring country on Saturday night.

Greece will be playing with Kazakhstan on Wednesday afternoon and has two more matches with Denmark away on October 8 and Georgia at home on October 12 before the qualifying round ends.

"Turkey's 2-2 result with Denmark is an extremely positive result. We were pleased with it and it fills us with optimism. We have many hopes of qualifying and now we are going for 'three out of three'," said Greek striker Angelos Charisteas, adding that "if we beat Kazakhstan we will be taking a step towards winning second place."

Standings in group 2 after 10 matches played:Ukraine 24, Turkey 17, Greece (nine matches) 15, Denmark (nine matches) 13, Albania 12, Georgia (nine matches) 9 and Kazakhstan (nine matches) 0.
