  • [01] PM holds talks with public order minister on ministerial issues, Easter exodus and arrest of wanted fugitive Apostolos Vavylis

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis held talks on Saturday morning with Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis, who said he briefed him on ministerial issues, traffic organising in light of the Easter exodus and the success of the Greek Police with the arrest of wanted fugitive Apostolos Vavylis in Bologna, Italy, on Friday evening.

Vavylis was sought by the Greek Police for his alleged role in scandals related to the Greek Orthodox Church.

The minister congratulated the Greek Police which, as he said, utilised information methodically and with confidence and steady steps to achieve this result.

He added that he contacted Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis for necessary arrangements to be made for Vavylis to be extradited to Greece and stressed that "I want to believe that the request will be accepted by the Italian authorities."

Voulgarakis emphasised that action was taken to detect the fugitive involving repeated contacts both at political and police level, since Vavylis did not top the list of the most wanted fugitive in Europe but was in a low position on INTERPOL's wanted list.

The minister revealed that many operations were carried out in many countries and noted that of information obtained, some had not been timely or accurate.

He further said that the Greek Police utilised new technologies and succeeded in having Vavylis arrested after working calmly, methodically and according to plan.

Voulgarakis also pointed out that the Greek Police do not function in accordance with communication or public opinion criteria and added that the delegations sent succeeded in achieving this positive outcome.
