The Athens bourse finished higher on Wednesday, bucking a decline in other European markets.

Sentiment was fuelled by heavy buying in high-capitalisation Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation, mainly by a single institutional investor abroad, that drove up the stock 2.10 percent.

The general share index gained 0.79 percent to end at the day's high of 2,148.58 points. Turnover was 77.1 million euros.

The FTSE/ASE-20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks ended 0.88 percent up; the FTSE/ASE-40 for medium capitalisation paper 0.90 percent higher; and the FTSE/ASE-80 for small cap equities 1.49 percent up.

Of 355 stocks traded, advances led declines at 210 to 77 with 68 issues remaining unchanged.
